Protect Your Driver’s License After a DUI Arrest

Your license is a separate case

7-DAY DEADLINE

After a DUI arrest in Washington, the Department of Licensing (DOL) can suspend or revoke your license through an administrative process that is separate from your criminal case. It can happen even if your criminal case has not been decided.

You have only 7 days to act

To challenge the administrative suspension, you must request a DOL hearing within 7 days of your arrest (or of receiving the DOL’s notice of suspension, if later). If you miss that deadline, the suspension generally takes effect automatically.

A DOL hearing is also an early opportunity to review the evidence in your case, including the officer’s report and testing procedures.

WHAT TO KNOW

Understanding license consequences

The length of a DOL suspension or revocation depends on your test result, whether you refused testing, and your prior record.

The right plan depends on your situation. A short conversation can make the deadlines and options clear.

Request your DOL hearing within 7 days of your arrest (or of receiving the DOL’s notice of suspension, if later) to protect your right to challenge the suspension.
